Sunrise at Ubuyagasaki Peninsula
6:30 AM â 7:30 AM
Start your day early â this is non-negotiable. The calm morning water at Ubuyagasaki Peninsula creates the famous "Inverted Fuji" (Sakasa Fuji) reflection. By 9 AM, wind ripples and clouds typically ruin the mirror effect.
- How to get there: 10-minute walk from most lakeside hotels, or 5-minute taxi from the station.
- Photo tip: Use a tripod and polarizing filter for the sharpest reflections.
ðž More viewpoints in our Photo Spots guide.
Chureito Pagoda
8:30 AM â 10:00 AM
Take the Fujikyu Railway (15 min) to Shimoyoshida Station. From there, it's a short walk to the base, then 398 steps up to the pagoda.
This is "the postcard shot of Japan" â the five-story pagoda framing Mt. Fuji. In cherry blossom season (early April) and autumn (mid-November), this spot is absolutely magical.
- Crowd tip: Arrive before 9 AM to beat the tour buses.
- Time needed: About 1â1.5 hours including the climb.
Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway
11:00 AM â 12:00 PM
Back in Kawaguchiko, take the Kachi Kachi Ropeway up Mt. Tenjo. The observation deck gives you an incredible bird's-eye view of the entire lake with Fuji as the backdrop.
- Cost: ¥1,000 round trip (adults).
- Alternative: Hike up instead â it's a moderate 45-minute trail through forest.
See all activities in our Things to Do guide.
HÅtÅ Noodle Lunch
12:30 PM â 1:30 PM
You can't visit Kawaguchiko without trying HÅtÅ â thick flat noodles in rich miso broth with pumpkin and mountain vegetables. It's the signature dish of Yamanashi Prefecture.
- Top pick: Houtou Fudoh (near the lake) â famous for its cloud-shaped building.
- Budget pick: Koshu Houtou Kosaku near the station â wider menu, shorter wait.
Full restaurant guide: What to Eat in Kawaguchiko.
Oishi Park & Lakeside Cycling
2:00 PM â 4:30 PM
Rent a bicycle (Â¥500/hour or Â¥2,000/day) and cycle along the northern shore to Oishi Park. In summer, you'll see lavender fields; in autumn, crimson kochia bushes â both with Fuji framed behind.
- Distance: About 5km from the station â flat and easy.
- Alternative: Take the Retro Bus (Red Line) if you prefer not to cycle.
- Seasonal bonus: Visit during the Cherry Blossom Festival or Autumn Leaves Festival for peak beauty.
Evening Onsen Soak
5:00 PM â 6:30 PM
End your day the Japanese way â soaking in a volcanic hot spring while (if you're lucky) watching the sunset behind Mt. Fuji. Fuji Yurari Onsen has 16 different baths and panoramic Fuji views for about Â¥1,500.
- Tattoo-friendly option: Fuji Yurari allows small covered tattoos. For larger tattoos, book a private bath (kashikiri-buro).
- Etiquette reminder: Wash before entering. No swimwear in traditional baths.
Full guide: Kawaguchiko Onsen Guide.
ð¡ Planning Tips
- Transport: The Retro Bus 2-day pass (Â¥1,500) covers all stops. Or rent a bike for maximum flexibility.
- Weather check: Fuji is most visible before 10 AM. If clouds roll in, don't despair â shift to indoor activities. See our seasonal guide.
- Have 2 days? Spend evening 1 at the onsen, and day 2 exploring the museums and art galleries.
